Raising Cultural Awareness through Everyday Instruction

Dear Wonderful Parents,

I have spent these past five weeks closely observing the instruction and delivery of all our teachers in every classroom to ensure that we are providing all of our children the highest quality education possible. After each observation is conducted, the teachers and I spend time, 1-on-1, to review the results of my observations. Meanwhile, the Education Specialist and I develop an on-going strategy to support the teachers in their growth by providing appropriate training, coaching and professional development. I am proud to share with you that the findings have been very encouraging, and that all of the teachers thus far have been very receptive to the suggestions that have been made during our 1-on-1 reflections. I can also tell you that we have an amazingly talented and extraordinary group of teachers who want nothing but the best for their students...your children.

As I am addressing the professional growth of each of our teachers, I'd like to solicit your assistance with helping me create a culturally diverse atmosphere in each of the classrooms where learning and exploration takes place. While we are a richly, diverse community at Sacred Heart School, I feel as if we could improve how our appreciation for our population is communicated through vibrant imagery and choices of literature in the classrooms. I am currently in the process of ordering some beautiful posters which teachers requested for a few of our classrooms, but I would love to invite you to participate as well.

Currently our English Language Arts teacher in middle school is introducing literary works highlighting the World War II era, and is requesting the following publications which relate to the Holocaust experience:

If anyone happens to have a copy of either of these graphic novels, could we please borrow them or ask you to donate them to our library?

Also, if you or your family has any artifacts, books, posters, or other items of historical or cultural significance that represents your national heritage, we would love to showcase them in our classrooms in order to celebrate your ancestry and recognize the rich diversity that makes Sacred Heart so special. Whether you choose to donate or lend, please let us know so that we can handle your items accordingly.

Queridos Padres Maravillosos,

Me ha pasado las últimas cinco semanas observando atentamente la instrucción y entrega de todos los maestros en cada salón para asegurar que cada joven esta recibiendo una educación del nivel más alto posible. Después de cada observación, los maestros y yo tenemos una reflexión individualmente para revisar los resultados de mis observaciones. Mientras tanto, la Especialista de Educación y yo vamos desarrollando una estrategia para apoyar los maestros en su crecimiento profesional con entrenamientos, instrucción, y talleres de desarrollo profesional. Me siento orgulloso y muy animado de los resultados, y en este momento todos los maestros han sido muy dispuestos a escuchar las sugerencias que hemos hecho durante nuestras reflexiones individuales. También te cuento que tenemos un grupo de maestros muy extraordinario y talentoso que quieren nada meno que lo mejor para los estudiantes…tus hijos.

Mientras estoy hablando con los maestros sobre su crecimiento profesional, quisiera solicitar su asistencia en ayudarme crear un ambiente multicultural en cada salón donde el aprendizaje y exploración se entrega. Como somos una comunidad muy diversa y única aquí en la Escuela del Sagrado Corazón, siento que podemos demostrar mas aprecio para nuestra populación con imágenes vibrantes y selecciones de literatura dentro los salones. Estoy en el proceso de ordenar unos carteles impresionante que me pidieron algunos maestros, pero quisiera también invitarte a participar en este proyecto.

En este momento la maestra de Ingles de los grados segundarios esta introduciendo unas obras literario destacando la Segunda Guerra Mundial de los EEUU, y esta pidiendo unos libros que pertenecen a la experiencia del Holocausto:

¿Si por casualidad uno de ustedes tienen una copia de cualquier de estas novelas, por favor me los prestas o si quieres se lo regala a nuestra biblioteca? También, si usted o su familia tiene algún artefacto, libro, cartel, o cualquier otro artículo de importancia describiendo algo histórico o cultural que refleja su herencia nacional, nos encantaría demostrarlo en nuestros salones para celebrar su ascendencia ancestral y reconocer la riqueza de la diversidad que hace Sagrado Corazón tan especial. Si usted elija prestar o regalar tal artículos, por favor avísanos para tratarlo apropiadamente.
